So we got up super early and made it to the Dublin airport. We decided to get McDonald's for breakfast since we had some extra time. Of course our plane was delayed. SHOCKER. We flew Ryanair. It wasn't my favorite, I'm going to be honest. It was a cheap flight, which is why we opted to use them. But it was basic. So basic that there wasn't even seat back pockets. You have to pay for your luggage, drinks, snacks, ear buds, etc. I know a lot of the airlines are doing that here in the good ol' USA now. However, this was my first experience with this kind of an airline. Honestly? Because I'm such a bargain hunter, I would probably fly Ryanair again just to save a buck (or a hundred).
The flight was about 3 hours. Lola slept the whole flight...the whole flight until the last 45 minutes. Then she decided to sit up out of nowhere and projectile vomit All. Over. The. Plane. All over, folks. She got it in my hair, on my clothes, on the seats, on the floor. McDonald's before flying is banned for life in my family. Remember the seat back pockets that don't exist? Neither did barf bags. EVERYONE on the plane was stuck smelling Lola's puke for the remainder of the flight and they were so mad...and disgusted...and mad (did I mention that?). I kinda wanted to crawl in a hole. Billy wasn't sitting with us because I was with the kids. Blake was about to throw up from seeing all of Lola's throw-up so I was in charge of dealing with the whole nightmare. I got up and got one billion paper towels from the flight attendant and tried to clean myself up the best I could. I'm actually getting a little sick as I type this! It was an experience I will never forget but one I wish that I could erase from memory! Ha!
Ok so we survived the rest of the plane ride (barely) and landed safely in Memmingen. We arrived safely but we had to wait a LONG time (smelling like vomit, mind you) to get through immigration. There, we were questioned about Blake having a different last name than my own. Luckily, I thought ahead and his dad had signed a letter allowing Blake to travel outside of the country. That crisis was averted. We spent the next little while in the bathroom rinsing ALL our clothes out so that we didn't smell quite as strongly. It wasn't a hundred percent better but it was definitely better than it was.
We set off to our car rental and we landed a NIIIIIICE Mercedes. I legit loved it and want one of my own. Then we got a little lost getting to Neuschwanstein (the most beautiful castle ever). You guys. I had been vomited on, gotten lost, it was SNOWING in Germany, and we dealt with all kinds of drama trying to get up to the castle....but the castle and the view was SO worth it. If you get a chance to go, GO. Like get there as fast as you can. The tour was wonderful once we climbed the giant hill in the freezing cold. We had complaining children and a sad little girl who didn't get to go on a horse carriage ride (because we didn't have time to exchange our money). Oh that was so disheartening. But we made it and the tour was awesome.
After the castle, we made our way to Munich where we were supposed to eat dinner with a friend of mine from high school. Hey, guess what? We got lost. So lost that we weren't sure we would ever find our way. Every person we stopped didn't "speak" English. I found that hard to believe. We finally found a pay phone and called my friend. We figured out how to get to their house and we arrived....FOUR hours late!!!!!! Guess what else? That awesome Mercedes? Had a GPS. Yup. You read that right. We totally could have avoided the wasted time and gas. Thank heavens our hosts figured out how to program said GPS. We never got lost again. Our dinner with friends was fabulous and we quickly fell in love with Munich.
We spent our time there touring Bayern Munich's stadium (Allianz Arena). Those who knows us, know how much we love soccer. I think even a non soccer-loving person would like the tour, though. We gave it two enthusiastic thumbs up. We also went to Dachau Concentration Camp. It was definitely a very somber experience but something I really felt the kids needed to see. We finished the night by eating at Hofbrauhaus. You guys want a super giant pretzel? This is your place. German pretzels are so delicious. I also loved their potato salad and spaetzle. Side note: I also ate potato salad and pretzels at the Allianz Arena cafe AND I had a pretzel at Neuschwanstein. Hey, I couldn't help myself! I want ALL the German potato salad and pretzels right now. Too bad I'm not there! Anyway, they also have the most delicious drink in Germany: Spezi. Try it. You won't regret it!
Germany is beautiful. We can't wait to go back. And we LOVED the Marriott we stayed in. If you ever need a room in Munich, definitely stay here. It was relatively new when we went and the staff was great. The rooms were awesome and it was a very pleasant experience. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/mucor-courtyard-munich-city-east/
Where did we go next? Guess you will have to come back tomorrow. That's right. I'm blogging FIVE times this week, y'all! I know you'll be chomping at the bit!
